IFATCA Statement on International Day of the Air Traffic Controller 2024

October 20th marks the International Day of the Air Traffic Controller. The International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA), as the largest international professional body representing air traffic controllers worldwide, extends its heartfelt appreciation to all air traffic controllers around the world for their exceptional service, often delivered under challenging circumstances. Following the COVID19 global pandemic, thankfully air traffic rebounded, with recovery surpassing expectations. However, this rapid resurgence has highlighted a well-documented global shortage of air traffic controllers, contributing to delays throughout systems worldwide. Despite this staffing shortage, which has led to excessive overtime and fatigue, our dedicated professionals continue to prioritise SAFETY above all else. Every day, air traffic controllers demonstrate unwavering commitment, ensuring the safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic. At the heart of aviation is the human. Controllers are the most crucial component of the ATM system and must be supported as its most valuable resource. They should never be seen as an expense but rather as a vital investment. And if we want ATM to be sustainable in the long term, investing in people is not a luxury, it is an obligation. “Invest in People: The Future of ATM” is not just our theme it is the blueprint for futureproofing the ATM sector. Now, more than ever, aviation system decision-makers must act – by planning effectively, committing resources, and ensuring the growth and wellbeing of the workforce that ensures safe skies and runways.
